PENANG TO LHR BY MALINDO AIR

Its a 4 hours flight from KL. They don't serve proper food. Its very tiring. There is not much cold inside cabin. The legroom is ample. The fare is not cheap and is at par with Thai Air.The only plus point is that it goes direct from KL.

Always wrap your luggage with polythese packing to avoid pilferage during the journey!
 The flight was delayed!

Airport (Suvarnabhumi) Train:

l  Xpress Service @150BHT, 15min from arprt to city center.
l  City Line Commuter @15-45BHT, 30min
l  There are 8 stations on the route and Makkasan is the city center
l  The last station is Phaya Thai
l  The airport has left luggage facility at Louise hotel at Departure lounge. The rates are 150BHT/day/piece
l  The toilets at BKK airport do not have water shower. Take wet tissues.
l  The immigration didn't me ask for 500$ or anything else.Jan1, 2014.
l  The airport Limousine taxi charged 950BTH to Tune hotel in Asoke area. Very expensive. Normal taxi@400BHT including toll charges.
l  It is advisable to exchange money in the town. The rate is very low at airport.
l  The food items are fine at check-in bays of International Departures, but after immigration, the Dep. Lounge area is very expensive.
l  The taxi fare from Tune hotel to Suvarnabhumi Airport was around 210+100 (Tolls)+20(service charge).Tune hotel charged 10BHT for booking a taxi. I gave 50BTH tip to bell boy.
l  The security check at BKK while going to Penang was smooth for me, only they asked me to remove belt, phone & jacket. For watch I told them" it's not metal", so ok. Nirvaan's wallet was rechecked & they took small cutter.

Don Mueang Airport:(2015)

l  Immigration fellow checked the name of hotel on arrival card of everyone in the queue.
l  The official at immi counter asked me if it was my first visit. Despite my reply, she only understood when I showed her the old passport as if her English was poor. Always keep old passport if there is no previous visa shown on the new.
l  The normal taxi service is at the extreme left end at gate #8 of arrival hall. They issued a coupon upon telling them the hotel name (Ibis, in Sathorn). Although it was mentioned that the taxis are metered but the driver told me 'traffic jam' & demanded 500BTH. His meter was off.I offered 400 including toll payment & he agreed immediately. There was a traffic jam on the way.
l  The off-line maps application is great. It worked fine in Iphone & I cross-checked the directions in the taxi.
l  On return, the hotel called the taxi & told me that it will be 400BTH. Upon arriving airport I asked the taxi driver & he asked me to pay by the meter, which was only 200BTH.
l  Before checkin to Air Asia counter one has to pass the baggage via security. They didn't allow 'power bank' in the checked-in baggage if it is more than 27000mA & asked me to collect after check in. They allow it in cabin anyway.
l  The AirAsia check in counter staff asked many questions about my stay in Malaysia & mentioned something about return ticket to Pak. I told him, I m married & live in Mly. I showed him my old passprt, wedding card & driving licence. After asking many of his colleagues,  he finally issued the boarding pass. Phew. Lesson: Always keep your wedding certificate, old passport & driving licence when travelling to a 3rd country.
l  I didnt remove my belt or phone at security. She asked to put the phone in tray. Then another shouted to open the bag. She took the water bottle. I asked her to give me for drinking.During this debate I took the bag & moved on with the bottle as the scanner girl got mixed up & pointed to another bag. After drinking the water, I purposely went back & shoved the empty bottle to her arrogant face.
l  The immigration was smooth. No questions asked.
l  There are  few eateries in the transit lounge of gates 1-6 & nothing else. Its an old & dirty airport.

General Notes:

l  For hotels/guest houses I used trivago.com & booked via http://www.booking.comor http://www.agoda.comFor cheaper flights I used http://www.expedia.com & www.cheapflights.com  which were not cheap anyway. (2015)
l  Maxis signal was available on roaming with True. However, Mobilink was gone.1.1.2014
l  One can still send smsés on roaming@1RM/message
l  Overall Tune hotel experience was fantastic. Now the Tune hotel in BKK is closed. 2015
l  Preferred mode of transport was BTS. Average rate 28BTH.
l  Siam center is an interesting place. MBS Mall had cheapest T-shirts@99BT.
l  The best option for meals was still 7/11. However KFC & other options are also available near Tune hotel.
l  The massage parlour at Siam centre area near Jim Thompson house was cheapest. Thai massage (pressing)@200BT/hr. Oil massage@300BT/hr.
l  The night life for everything is available at Soi Cowboy lane accross the road in Asoke area.We walked through it & videographed the girls at Pubs. The first night, Iwas stopped by a girl saying "drink wid me", but I was not alone.
l  During the flight between Pg-Bkk only sandwitches were served with plastic crockery by Thai air.No headphones.
l  During the sector of Bkk-Lhr proper hot dinner was served with steal crockery. Headphones were provided by Thai air.
l  The famous PatPong area of night life, cabaret, naked dance etc is located in Silom area. It was 10min walk from hotel IBIS. (2015)
l  There was a Thai massage shop opposite IBIS hotel. I went with belt pouch, w/o passport & phone. One has to take off all d clothes & wear only underwear for full body aroma oil massage. Which is the rubbing one. It was expensive though, @550BT. (2015)
l  Its a good idea to book a hostel near airport for the long transit. I booked via Agoda.com and paid via Paypal. The hotel is Airy Resort and I booked a double room with beakfast & airport transfer for 72 RM. We arrived at 1.30am at BKK & proceeded to gate #4. The lady from Airy Resort with a name list was there. The van took us to the hotel, which was not that near, but a 10min ride. Receptionist was rude but the room was big enough to accomodate all 3 of us. There was TV & A/C available. The breakfast was good & no one asked about Gupu being with us.Conclusion: Buy plane tickets online, and for longer transit book a hotel outside with airport transfer and breakfast.Pay by paypal.
l  At BKK airport  immigration no one asked about 500$ or stay or return flight. This is second time that it was a smooth entry. It seems they only ask at road borders.
l  Airy resort is not a bad choice, apart from its location, which is inside many lanes & across a small river bridge, the hotel itself is quite decent. Clean, spacious dble bed, attached bath, attached restaurant, taxi service available for nearest MRT station for 60Baht, airport transfer vans for 200Baht, Breakfast is apx 150Baht. Checkout time is 12noon & last free van for airport is at 12.30pm.
l  Actually the hotel is around 2km from airport as shown on the map in Latkrabang area . It's the approach to it which takes time.

l  Muslim food is available at BKK airport at level 4, dep lounge but it's expensive; @25-30RM for a burger set. Try a Pizza shop nearby that sells set meal with drink around d same price.
l  The airport tax at Suvernabhumi airport, BKK is 700B/head. But if boarding cards are issued b4 hand throughout the journey by the agent at PG or LHE while checking-in, it might be avoided. Check with travel agent Joey Lim.
l  However, at Don Mueang airport the checkin staff didn't ask for airport tax.

Things to Take:

Compass+ Gyro
Thermometer (strip+glass)
Hanger & clothes pegs useful.
Tab with its keyboard & original charger.
Ball point with neck strap; convenient
1 multi-pocket trousers is fine.
Shorts or Pajama for sleeping.
No need to carry many T-shirts. One can wear again.
Don't bring thick dark colored Tshirts.1 Full sleeves shirt; must.
Vest with pocket; must
A hi-neck is best for train & conferences, its cold in A/C!
A soft pouch is better for camera. Keep many Chargeable batteries 2700mA & charger.
Take camera's extra memory card & batteries or take 16gb card.
Water bottle with handle; very convenient.

General Notes:

It's useful to have Youth Hostel card.
Thai address must be mentioned at Thai Immi cards (Dep/Arr). Take care of the card.
Better take a copy of Thai visa application form.
No one asked for US$500 also at Thai immi.(now they do).
Keep wedding certificate, card & driving license of Mly as proof of my living in Mly.(2015)
On arrival Thai immi asked me if it was my 1st visit as I was using my new passport. So I showed my old passport as their English was poor. Always keep the old passport when using the new one without any previous visa.(2015)
Its good to have a mix of US$,TC's & Thai Bahts.[500TCs+800US$+3000BHT-in 2015]
Open a bank A/C in BGK, with overseas ATM
Re Entry Visa(1100BHT).Possible on Kayu Hitam border & airport.
Must have 20,000BHT/500US$ to show at border. If more, then declare at Thai customs.
Now they don't allow powerbanks more than 27000mA capacity in checked-in luggage nevertheless one can still carry them in cabin.(2015)
No need to carry lonely planet books, they are available cheap near Khao San Rd.
Khao San Rd. is backpacker's heaven & cheap guest hses are available.
Take card reader &thumb drive to upload photos.
Sky train (MRT) is fast & easy mode of transport @25 B.
Best mode of commuting; Non A/C buses @7B
Both sms (1RM) & voice calls are expensive to MLYSA as on roaming.
Muslim Biryani available at "Victory monument"@25B
They don't have yellow thermometer. Strip one is 55-75B.
Currency exchange rate is good at Khao San Rd;
1US$=34B
No one asked for return train ticket at Thai immi
Alakaline batteries are expensive.@15B each.
The medical emergency treatment is not free in Thailand (unlike Mlysa) even in Govt. Hospitals. Hence a medical insurance is a good idea.
Take chicken rice for train with water bottle.B/Fast;Bun or Croissant,Tea in train(kitchen) is avlble@15B.
No need to carry plates, spoons, xtra food stuff etc.
The conversion rate is better at Mlysn border than downtown.(Komtar)
Back Pack & sleeping bag/s are very useful.
The Offline Maps application is very useful in both Iphone & Tab as it worked
w/o wifi or mobile data.(2015)

TRAVELS-MLY & NEARBY

TRAVEL WITHIN MLY & NEARBY: 10122015

KL:

AIR ASIA TRAVEL NOTES:

  • Pleasant cabin experience but seats have little leg room. The best seats are #4 in the first row or #14 (14 has more legroom & reclines)

  • I did web check-in to save 10RM for counter check-in. Seat Nos. were given randomly on the web check printout.

  • Bookings done using EZ Debit Card do not have any extra charges, but via Bid Debit, bank or credit card you have to pay.

  • Cabin baggage is 7kg max allowed but so far nobody checked.

  • Bus#12 came at 7am at Desa Pg.Bus#401E & 102 go to airport via Bukit Jambul, every 1/2hr, Fare@ 2.70, 6AM to 1030PM. It doesn't stop at or near Desa Pinang as it goes over d bridge. So, u have to walk upto Macallum stop which is at the corner of road going inside Macallum area.Bus#401E took >1hr to airprt;7.40-8.50am.(2hrs total).

  • I took my car to park at Pg. airport. Take the ticket from machine. Charges are 24RM/night. Motorbike is free.

  • For taxi, the best option is MyTeksi @35~45

  • If you take airport taxi it costs around 45RM to Desa Pg, before midnight rates start.

  • I once took only one carry-bag(wheels) & a fabric bag only. AirAsia charges 45RM for 15kg checked-in baggage.

  • Took ETS train for 12.50RM.Ticket counter is in arrival hall.

  • I found out that a rucksack is definitely better than a fabric bag for commuting in town, more so if the rucksack is also having wheels.

  • LRT STARTS AT 6AM.

  • If checked in already, you can directly go to dep. lounge at 3rd floor of KLIA2.

  • Pg. security is less finicky than KL. They took my tester at KLIA2 & even small knife from med bag. They ask to pass through the scanner again. Asked me to remove belt. I remove belt n phone n kept them in rucksack, not in tray.

  • If alarm rings tell’em "keys" or "coins" or "stylus".

  • Water & food items can be taken in rucksack.

  • McDonalds & all food items rates are double at both Pg & KLIA2 airports.

  • It's better to be early as sometimes they close boarding earlier than schedule time.

  • In the morning Bayan Baru route could be jammed so take alternate route via PISA straight to airport.

MAS TRAVEL NOTES:

At KL Sentral, you can check-in your baggage n go to KLIA by train, i.e "KLIA Express". Charges are 35RM one way. Must be at KL S 2hrs before. Takes 30minutes to be at airport. Train leaves every 20minutes.

*KFC at KLIA has reasonable rates. After security check in dep lounge Mary Brown is reasonable.

FIREFLY TRAVEL NOTES:

Very good experience.
Booked by internet via CIMB credit card & printed.Direct debit from banks is also possible.
Bus#401E & 102 go to airport via Bukit Jambul, every 1/2hr, Fare@ 2.70, 6AM to

1030PM. 401E is free fr Firefly passengers. Just show yr booking/boarding pass.

It doesn't stop at or near Desa Pinang as it goes over d bridge. So, u have to walk upto Macallum stop which is at the corner of road going inside Macallum area.

*20 kg free fr West Mly. Fr East Mly @25 online.

* Size restriction on cabin bag; 56x36x23 cm & 7kg.

*can take water & food items on domestic flgt.

*checked my phone wires in pocket at PG security.

*I did'nt take my laptop.Its a pain to carry.

*There is no shuttle bus at Subang. One has to take the normal bus.1hr journey to KL S.

*FIREFLY operates at terminal#2 of Subang.

*KL Rapid bus# U81 goes frm Subang to KL central.Bus stop is across d road at MAS

bldg.Fare@2.50. Direction: SE.

* There is a covered bridge frm d 2nd floor of Subang terminal#2 arrival hall, that crosses d road & leads 2 bus stop.

* the Food avlble at terminal#2 is expensive & lousy.

* Keep longsleeve shirt in cabin bag or a jacket.

* 45min ride by bus 2 KL-S.

MALINDO AIR NOTES:

Very pleasant experience & sufficient leg room. The best of all three above.
It goes to both KLIA2 & Subang.
One can charge Tab or phone in cabin with USB provided at entertainment screen.
15kg baggage is allowed free.
Light snacks are served.
Be cautious for the night flight as it gets delayed usually.
You can change the flight time & date after booking without any extra charges.
If security keeps anything, go back & checkin yr bag, provided the departure time is sufficient.
For Subang it’s a small plane, entrance is from d tale end.
Front most seats have more legroom.
Better to choose KLIA2 because Subang only has road link, no LRT, hence traffic jam

TRAIN:

  1. Comfortable & hassle-free travel is by train; but its quite cold inside. Hi neck vest is needed.

  2. Berth@40/30child,9p-5.30a6.(Seat@20)Reserve 1st.Can book online 48hrs b4 by credit card & seats shown r actual.(Dates can be changed, once).Can refund 75% b4 72hrs.

  3. Better buy from counter 2 avoid online risk. Pay cash.

  4. Note down E-ticket's Ref. ID in phone.

  5. Ferry: starts at 5.30am from B/W.

  6. The Indian Muslim restaurant outside B/W Rlwy stn has capati which is OK.@1RM.The outside food court is lousy & expensive.

  7. Take d left side of connecting passage when coming from ferry. The slopy direct one has overhead bridge which is tiring.

  8. Bring along food for journey; Nasi gorengx2+water+fruit(bananas)best.Nimko,chips,sweets,biscuits,chess useful.

  9. Strap locks are best to lock trolley bag in train.

  10. Padlocks r also must 2 lock luggage in train, when u go to toilet or asleep.

  11. Shorts is better than Sarong fr toilet in train & elsewhere.

NOTES OF TRAIN TRAVEL:14/11/2012

  1. Shouldn't come so early at waiting room, because the wooden benches are tiring to sit long.

  2. Wifi is available at waiting room, but very slow n disconnects. It is Penang free wifi & asks for registration. My user/pw is cheetah/123456,email is bakup.

  3. We had food at Kapitan b4 walking to ferry terminal.

  4. 11pm train came at 1030 & we moved into train after d announcement.

  5. It was too cold in d train.

  6. Its better to sleep early so that early morning you can use the toilet. The latrine is shaky but can be used.

  7. A light pyjama is best for sleeping in train. Trousers can be changed b4 sleeping, while lying on the berth.

  8. Train arrived KL 30min late.

  9. It is better to bring two towels next time. One each for me & other two.

  10. You can go straight to Imbi while using LRT to Hang Tuah station & then changing to Monorail without buying extra token. There is a special escalator leading towards monorail bypassing the token exit machines.

  11. Sri Petaling LRT line is extended to Puchong which will go upto IOI mall.

  12. The monorail is connected to KL Sentral now.

  13. Go KL bus is free to move around in downtown area of KL. But careful wid pick pockets & avoid putting yr purse on the side of person sitting next to you.

  14. Ask bhabhi to cook parathas.Very tasty.

  15. The LRT & Monorail are packed between Bukit Bintang, Imbi, Hangtua area generally.

LUGGAGE:

1Cabin wheeled suitcase(best even for 2,3 days)+strap lock,

1 Rucksack(must)+its pad lock+strap lock.

1 xtra rucksack/clothbag fr food items.

(MUST)Small soft black bag 2 carry mobile, purse, glasses etc.

*Keep some space in bag fr things 2 bring. Ha ha!

CLOTHING:

Black woolen cap, socks, long sleeves T-shirt or jacket(change in train),blanket or shawl fr sleeping in A/C in train or bus.1 sun cap,1 multipocket pajama fr travel, sleep'g & home use,1-m'pocket trousers/jeans fr visiting people/offces,4-T shrts(2-collar,1-bushrt,1-T-shr)(1 shirt/day),1 prayer cap,1 baju Melayu(if needed at bhabhi) or Kurta Suit(@Harbns),2 vests(1 pocket +1 norml),2 underwears, Bahama shorts,Strap chappal.

Saujana Aster: 1 shorts, 1 tracksuit, 1 vest 2 towels are in Saujana Aster.

Note:

*There is really no need to carry so many T-shirts. One can wear one shirt many times, except for conferences.

*White pajama is not a good choice, becomes dirty quickly.

*An aftershave lotion is better n needed rather than a perfume. If possible, take both.

*Bring many USB cables & USB hub to charge at least two things at the same time. But not when u r taking only one thing or 2 USB chargers.

A multi connector USB cable is much better to charge two devices from one Samsung charger. (see photo#1)

PHOTO#1

* Must bring hi current Tab charger (1.5A) to charge it quickly, which can be used for other things also if USB slot is given.eg, iPhone, phone watch, blue tooth earpiece, power bank

*It’s better to have charger of 3pin instead of 2pin+converter in Mly, but for overseas take the right socket &/or convertible travel plug.

*For Nikon camera charger also, find a 3pin converter.

*No need to carry DSLR Nikon. Its damn heavy.

*No need to carry mug for tea, bring a paper glass or get one from McDonald's or 7/11.

Conference Notes:
* When staying in a hi class hotel for a conference, iron & hairdryer are available in d room.(see photo#1 above).

*Water boiler is also provided with teabags.

*It is cold during the seminar, so a decent coat, sweater or jacket, shoes n socks and possibly a decent cap are needed.

*1 tie is enough.

*2 vests & 1 pocket vest are enough. They become dirty soon. Can be washed. 3 U/Wears max.

* Normal black trousers are useless because of lack of pockets.

* Hotel room T-shirt or long sleeves should be a decent one, or wear the one with message.

* A shawl, coat, sweater or Jacket is essential for conference room.

* UniKlo full sleeves vest does not fully protect from aircon cold in conferences. I had to wear coat on top of it. A hi-neck could be better as I felt cold in the neck area.

*Tab along with its keyboard & original charger is better to bring rather than laptop.

*For lectures record the voice via Tab or iPhone voice recorder. Plus take pictures of the slides of presentations.2015.

* Tab has the advantage of phone & many useful applications esp. Offline maps.

* Use iPhone less for recording any media as it is complicated to transfer photos, videos & audio files from it.

* In 4star hotels, often toothbrush, toothpaste, shaving kit, towels, soaps, tissue papers, slippers, towel gown etc are provided.

*However in Budget hotels (@100-200RM) soaps, towels & shampoo are given but shaving kit, slippers are not given. I found that the tea, coffee in "Hotel Sentral" was free.

*If u have to collect towel or anything else, keep it in the wardrobe with your coat or shirts on the very first day, so that u can see it is replenished on the next day, rather than collecting it on the last day. However it is dangerous also as they can report for stealing.

*Usually, the hotels checkout time is around 12noon, while check-in time is after 12noon, say 2pm.

*Usually the 3star above hotels have baggage leaving area known as Concierge. You can check out at the given time & leave your luggage in concierge. Then u r free to roam around until its yr flight time or if you are checking in to another hotel.

*It’s good to travel alone sometimes especially for conferences. One is free to make decisions & network with others. Peace of mind.

Never take a taxi from Harbans place for KL sentral , @17rm.at 6am.
No need to carry phone watch, hardly used.
There is no direct train from-to lcct-kl sentral. It is bus+train service and takes about 1hr 15 min @12.50RM.
The Air Asia bus between LCCT & KLS takes about an hour & costs between 8-10RM.
MyTeksi application on smart phone is a useful service and can only be booked via smart phone. They don't book via telephone. The charges are same as normal taxi.

  1. For Tune Hotels, consider bringing pillow, blanket or sleeping bag for 3rd person.

  2. Room slippers are needed to be used in hotel.

JOHOR BHARU:

(Feb2014)

Airasia started boarding earlier than schedule time.
Flight is 1hr 10min.
There is a free shuttle bus between airport & JB central for Airasia passengers. Goes every hour.Just look for the bus counter at airport print your free tickets with booking number.
A shuttle Sky bus, is also available for Tune hotel @9RM but frequency is less.

TUNE HOTEL NOTES:

Tune hotel is at Danga Bay area which is a bit far from JB Sentral. The bus took RM 1.60 each which was going towards Kuali.
Tune hotel did special arrangements for my bd as requested by Gupu.Ballons, greeting card n cake were provided.Early check-in allowed. A free comfy set was given plus free toilettries, tv, a/c, wifi.
Tune hotel, Danga bay is in a remote place, down South West, far from JB Sentral. It's on the highway, so to get a bus back to town, you have to get a bus to next station, then cross over from bridge n then take a bus for JB Sentral. Else taxi@20RM.There is nothing else around Tune Hotel, Danga Bay, better stay around downtown area next time.
There is no cheaper food options near Tune hotel. We ate lunch at the Indian cafe within the premises, the capati was 2RM while nasi kampung was 7RM.Dinner we took at 7Spice, food was good but expensive.Fr BF I took 3in1 coffee from 7-11 with biscuits.Nevertheless, this Tune hotel has got hot n cold water machine, so one can refill water bottle n make tea F.O.C

Some Tips:

Wash the toilet seat b4 using.
The locker inside the room is free.
No need to carry the mug for tea, better bring along a paper glass or it can be purchased frm 7-11

My Teksi&Easy Teksi are available in JB. But for Easy Taxi you must select budget taxi else blue (executive) taxi is double the price. We took MyTeksi for Legoland costing 17RM, while coming back we took executive blue taxi costingb34RM to Tune hotel.
There are lockers at Senai airport, JB for 30, 20RM & at JB Sentral for 20, 10RM.
JB Sentral closes at 10pm, how stupid!

LEGOLAND:

Tickets for Legoland only are 120rm for adults, children n senior citizens it is 90rm. We were able to get senior citizen rate, she only saw Saby. Don't take waterpark as it is smae everyehere. They did'nt check our bags so can take food items. We took water bottle. It's interesting place, especially small scale working models, 4D cinema, mind challenge robotics, train ride, skylift, etc. The food items were not very expensive & affordable. Need almost a full day to visit everything. The CSOs were nice. There was discounted Tshirts so we bought for 10RM each. There is public bus also LM1 goes to JB Sentral, bus stop is on the left side of entrance. The day was very hot n it was tiring. Benches are available.Overall it was not a bad experience except for very high entrance ticket.
